View IndoctriNation for Free through December 31

indoctrinationJoaquin Fernandez and The Gunn Brothers released IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America in 2011 and the movie continues to have a profound effect on families around the world. Although the film could be deemed pro-homeschooling, I found it to be more about children and the influences presented to them every day as they are shuttled off to school, away from home, in a big yellow school bus. If you have not yet seen the movie, it is available now to view for free online through Thursday, December 31. You may also purchase the DVD.

Colin Gunn provides narration for the film. Gunn is a Scotland native, homeschooling father of eight children, who now lives in Waco, Texas.

At the time the move was made, Gunn purchased a big yellow school bus, which is a universally recognized symbol of public school, and drove across the United States with his wife (Emily) and their seven children. During this period, the Gunns interviewed a number of people – administrators, former students, parents, teachers and theologians.

The audience is not presented a glossed perspective of the public school system, but instead the reality of it and what it has become over the years. Students are not just presented reading, writing and math anymore while at school, but also must manage through many social issues like sexual sin, abortion, drugs and alcohol and violence while being forced to leave their Christian values at the school door.

Gunn interviewed Sarah LaVerdiere, a teacher at Bugg Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“They have taken Christ out from the morals, so they have taken the foundation that the morals are based on away.”

See LaVerdiere discuss the challenges she faced as a Christian teacher in the public school system.

LaVerdiere later resigned from the public school system.

IndoctriNation goes on to show how the debate of whether or not Christians should allow their children to attend public school is a point of contention with major leaders in the Christian community. The heated topic is not one that only exists within our private communities where we live.

Whether you decide to homeschool or send your child to a school away from home, as a parent, IndoctriNation is a film you should watch. Gunn and Fernandez provide a keen perspective into the current state of public schools. There is no need for embellishment of the scenarios shared in the movie, as they are stating fact. I do realize that all public, private and away from home school settings do not have detrimental effects on children, but many do. Your children should not have to spend their school day defending the values you teach them at home, while also trying to obtain an education.

As Gunn says, our children have “impressionable minds.” Given the choice, I would like to be the one who does most of the impressing on the minds of my children. Another comment made in the movie is “the raising of the character of our children is not the responsibility of the schools.” I believe my children will be better witnesses after they have a solid foundation in their faith and have learned how to witness rather than learning on the battle field.

I do agree that homeschooling is a personal choice and it is not right for every family. A decision all Christian parents must make, according to Gunn, is whether or not to “protect them (our children) from public schools or leave our children in the system to influence for the better.”

IndoctriNation presents great perspective on a heated subject that may always be a point of contention for Christian parents. This is a wonderful film to show for a group discussion with your family, but I would highly suggest it be for a more mature audience due to the nature of some of the issues presented in the movie. Prescreen the movie before sharing with your children.

Deadline approaching for Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards

December 8, 2015 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

mid_southThe Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards presents an opportunity for serious art students, in seventh through twelfth grades, to compete for cash prizes and scholarships. The contest, which was created in 1965 as the Junior Mid-South Exhibition, receives more than 2,000 entries each year. The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has partnered with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers since 1989 in presenting the competition that sees artwork in a variety of categories including drawing; graphic design; fashion; film; mixed media; painting; photography; sculpture; senior portfolios and more (see all categories). Submissions are accepted Wednesday, September 16 through Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 10:59 CST (more detailed deadline schedule). Students may submit new artwork that has been created from January through December 2015.

Judging is done digitally, so it is advised to send high quality art submissions. This will allow the full integrity of the artwork to be displayed. Blind judging will be used, so do not include any personal information (ex: signature) on your work. The judging takes place Monday through Friday, January 4-8, 2016.

Students may easily submit their artwork online, which must be done by Tuesday, December 15. The video below gives you some instructions on how to photograph your work to present your piece in the best manner.

Writing and art submissions are $5 per individual submissions and $20 per portfolio. There are accommodations for students if they are unable to afford the fee.

Seniors who earn National Medals are eligible to receive scholarships through colleges and universities that partner with the awards program. More than $250,000 in awards and scholarships is given annually to top Awards recipients and their educators.

Winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 12 at 12 p.m. If you have a question, some of these answers may help you. If you have more questions, e-mail Elesha Newberry or call (901) 544-6243 for more information.

Do you have an appreciation of art, but not the skill? You may visit the Brooks Museum and go on a self-guided tour of pieces entered in the Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards. The 2016 Mid-South Scholastic Exhibition will be on display Saturday, January 30 through Sunday, February 28, 2016. Call Ms. Newberry for a reservation, because tour spaces go quickly.

Help Deck the Arbor for Christmas at Shelby Farms Park

November 11, 2015 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

There are only 44 more days until Christmas and Shelby Farms Park wants to bring the magic of Christmas to Woodland Discovery Park. In order to do that, they need your help. Each year, through the Deck the Arbor program, the winding serpentine arbor tunnel outside of the children’s park is decorated with ornaments that are handmade by people just like you. This is the fourth year the program has been held and is part of the preparations for readying the park for the Orion Starry Nights.

Over the years, this community art project has drawn participation from schools; classrooms; youth groups, businesses, individuals and homeschoolers. Participants may be creative with the design of their ornaments while keeping with the Christmas spirit. When making your ornament, you should use materials that will be able to withstand the winter temperatures, which are often cold and wet. The ornaments will be hung on the steel wire arbor with zip-ties for approximately 40 days. Participation in the program is free. This is also a great project a family may do together.

Ornaments must be delivered to the park by Friday, November 20 (extended deadline), so they may be hung by the park volunteers. If you would like to hang your own ornament(s), you will be assigned a time and a section on the arbor to decorate. Remember to bring your family and friends during the Orion Starry Nights to show off your creative and decorative flair.

The ornaments will be available for pick-up on Monday, December 28. You must make arrangements and return to the park to claim your ornaments. All ornaments not claimed by December 28 will be recycled.
Read the application to participate in Deck the Arbor. Contact Coral O’Connor by e-mail coconnor@shelbyfarmspark.org or call (901) 222-7265 for more information.

Be a part of making Shelby Farms magical this Christmas season.

SWE at CBU to offer S.T.E.M. workshop for girls

November 2, 2015 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

cbu_stemThe Society of Women Engineers (SWE) chapter on the Christian Brothers University (CBU) campus in Memphis is sending a “shout out” to all girls who may or may not have, ever considered pursuing a degree in a S.T.E.M. field. The organization has previously hosted spring and summer workshops presented by CBU administrators, but this is the first time a student-led workshop has been presented. The SWE Fall Workshop will be held on Saturday, November 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

As workshop co-chairs of the CBU SWE, undergraduate sophomores Yuliana Luna and Georgina Johns have created the free workshop for middle and high school girls to introduce them to S.T.E.M. career opportunities. Their goal is to encourage girls to consider engineering, or any S.T.E.M. program, when it comes to choosing a career.

“When I was younger, I knew I was good at science and math, but I was more interested in the performing arts,” said Luna who is majoring in Civil Engineering, with a minor in Packaging Engineering. “I liked math in high school, but I did not have this passion. It wasn’t until I got to college that I realized I was really good at math. I like science and physics and that is how I decided to get into engineering.”

Johns knew early on she wanted to study engineering.

“I was pretty good in math and I figured engineering would be the right way to go,” said Johns. “I am more of a visual person, so I’m studying Structural Engineering. To see structures built up by calculations is pretty cool to me.”

The women have benefitted from their membership with SWE in many areas like tutoring; association with a number of professional female engineers; mentoring support and resume assistance. Luna and Johns both graduated from schools in the Mid-South area; Luna, from Cordova High School and Johns, from Houston High School. They want to encourage other girls as they have been supported.

“There are not enough women in this field and it would be great to have more,” said Luna.

There will be a morning session from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for sixth through eighth graders and an afternoon session from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for ninth through twelfth graders. The focus will be on Civil and Mechanical Engineering. There will be discussions, demonstrations and hands-on opportunities. The workshops will be taught by a CBU professor and an upper-class senior from the engineering department.

“Some of the activities include working with math, physics and different types of sciences,” said Johns. “In the Civil Engineering workshop, there will be bridge building using K’NEX . The same engineering will be covered in both workshops, but the older level will be a little more advanced.”

Luna and Johns have great expectations for the day and shared girls are already responding to “the call” and have registered for the workshops. Both women agreed the engineering field is growing and will continue to be a part of the future. They want to see more women involved.

“Engineering is going to grow and we need diversity, meaning females in the field, to get a different perspective than males,” said Johns. “I think, over time, females will hopefully rule over the engineering profession.”

E-mail e-mailing Yuliana Luna or Georgina Johns to register for the workshop.
