TN Promise Team Meetings for Homeschoolers

March 11, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

If your high school, graduating senior applied for the TN Promise scholarship, it is time for them to attend the required spring team meeting.

Hopefully, they already attended the fall meeting that was held in their county in 2018. All applicants are required to attend both team meetings (fall and spring) to remain eligible for the scholarship. You must attend the team meeting that is held in the county where you live and homeschool.

You do not need to register to attend the team meeting, but must attend. If not you are unable to attend the meeting, read here to learn what excuses will be accepted for missing a team meeting.

Tips:
1) Sign your name on the sign in sheet when you arrive and confirm your name is on the correct sheet before you leave. If your name is not on the roster, you will not receive credit for attending the meeting.

2) Bring a pen/pencil and notepad for taking notes.

3) Come with any questions you have regarding the TN Promise scholarship, community service hours, etc.

4) Parents should attend the team meeting with their student, so they can ask questions and know what is going on.

5) If your child has already started earning community service hours (eight required), you may start logging those hours. Service hours must be completed and submitted for the fall 2019 school year by Monday, July 1.

All meetings occur during Central Standard Time unless otherwise noted.

Support the SRP and Shop for Prom

February 20, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

Dressing up in a beautiful dress and looking pretty is fun to do. That is one reason we are looking forward to Homeschool Prom 2019: “Once Upon A Time”. Finding that perfect dress to wear is not always easy, but is possible and may happen at the Formal Dress Sale to benefit the Scarlet Rope Project (SRP).

There will be more than 400 dresses available at the Formal Dress Sale that will be held on Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23, at the Jackson Walk Plaza in Jackson, Tennessee. The dresses not only include timeless ones that may be used for prom or other formal events, but also dresses that could be used as theatre costumes for regular or period productions.

“The dresses were donated to the Scarlet Rope Project by the Highlander Boutique, which closed in the late nineties,” said Julanne Stone, Scarlet Rope Project Executive Director.  “They are beautiful and Ms. Tennessee quality.”

The Scarlet Rope Project is a faith-based, non-profit that was founded about four years ago. Its mission is “to provide a safe place for healing and restoration to survivors of sex trafficking>“. Since its inception, SRP has served more than 23 women by providing them with housing and programming that equips them with the social and educational tools they need to transition to safe, independent and empowered living.

The Formal Dress Sale will benefit the SRP as well as the people shopping the sale. All dresses are only $20. Cash, check or PayPal will be accepted for all purchases. People may shop the two-day event on Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The proceeds from the sale will go towards the services provided for women in SRP,” said Stone. “They will also help with paying for rent and utilities for our house.”

You may support SRP by shopping at the sale and/or take action by donating financially, volunteering, attending a fundraising event and praying.

NACAC College Fair Comes to Memphis

February 18, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) National College Fair is coming to Memphis in April and bringing representatives from close to 100 colleges and universities from around the United States. I am not going to lie about trying to keep my children (i.e. babies – can’t leave home until they are 99) close to home, but this is a great opportunity for all high school students. It is not too early for freshman to start thinking about college. I will be taking my freshman child.

The National College Fair will have admission representatives ready to visit and speak with your teen, so they can find the “perfect college” that could be the right fit for them. Attendees will be able to ask questions and get answers about the schools, the admission process, campus life and more.

Although the event is free, you may want to register now for the Memphis fair, so you can bypass the registration line at the door.

There will be a morning and afternoon session on Thursday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. One of those should fit your schedule.

Agriculture: Food for Life Art Contest

February 13, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

Picture courtesy of the Agricenter International.

Are you hungry? Without agriculture, we would become a civilization of processed foods. Oh, but we do need agriculture to make processed foods. Forget processed foods. We need agriculture and the good health it promotes in our lives. What limitless opportunities do you see agriculture opening to people and the next generation? If you have an idea, you can bring it to life through a creative art form for the Ag Day Student Art Contest & Exhibition 2019. The theme this year “Agriculture: Food for Life”.

Agriculture has been one of the main sources for our food supply. Despite the challenges of weather and other natural disasters, agriculture has been consistent for many years and one on which we can depend. Improvements and advancements in the area continue to be made and we need to keep the ideas coming. Advances in technology, genetics and biology have opened the doors to thinking beyond what is possible today in agriculture to the possibilities of the future. Children of today will be the visionaries of tomorrow. The 2019 Ag Day Art Contest opens the door for them to imagine the possibilities of the future of agriculture and the preservation of the trade for the future.

The 2019 Ag Day Art Contest is open only to third through twelfth grade students in Shelby and Desoto Counties. There are three contestant categories:

Category 1: Third through sixth grades
Category 2: seventh through ninth grades
Category 3: tenth through twelfth grades

Creativity is encouraged and students have the opportunity to use one of the following mediums for their submission*:

• Drawing
• Painting
• Collage
• Photography
• Graphic Design
• Short Video (30 seconds to three minutes)

Cash prizes will be awarded to First Place ($100), Second Place ($50) and Third Place ($25) Winners. Teachers who have first place winners will receive $100 each. All teachers will receive an entry, for each competing student, in the drawing for a $250 prize that may be used to purchase art supplies for the classroom.

All art submissions* are due to the Agricenter by Friday, March 1, 2019. They may be mailed to the Agricenter International ,7777 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, Tennessee 38120. Video submissions may be mailed, hand-delivered or e-mailed to Tim Roberts {trobert6@utk.edu} through We Transfer (use the free version).

The awards ceremony will be held in March at the Agricenter. Teachers do not have to be present to win the random drawing.

If you have questions, call (901) 707-8376 or e-mail Laura Robertson.

Read the contest rules.

*Note all submissions become the property of the Agricenter International and will not be returned.

Get Listed!: Support & Information Directory

February 11, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

Homeschooling in Tennessee is awesome! There are so many opportunities for homeschoolers in the state. We have athletics, educational and fun field trip opportunities, and fun social events. Just because they are out there, does not mean homeschoolers know they exist or how to find them.

When my family moved to West Tennessee, I looked forward to the new experiences, adventures and events we would enjoy together. Unfortunately, I usually found out about many things too late. Because of that, Homeschool Roster was created. Over the years, Homeschool Roster has grown to become a realiable and useful, online information resource for West Tennessee homeschoolers, as well as families in the surrounding states of Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia and Kentucky.

Homeschool Roster is creating a directory of groups that include co-ops, support and tutorials that cater specifically to homeschool students and their families. If you direct or manage any one or more of these types of programs, I would love to include your group in the directory. The listing will be another free resource from Homeschool Roster, so there will be no charge for your group to be included. The focus of the directory will be West Tennessee, but I will consider including other groups that are within a reasonable distance to that area.

I know many groups are already thinking about (have completed planning – where is this school year going?) the 2019/2020 school year. The directory will be a great resource for those currently homeschooling, are new to homeschooling or are considering making the move to homeschooling. Help those families to quickly and easily find your group, and learn about the offerings of your co-op, support or tutorial group.

If you are a director (ex: administrator, teacher, etc.) or are affiliated with an extracurricular organization or program that caters specifically to homeschoolers (ex: athletic, theatre, music, etc.), there will be a directory for your group too.

To be included in one of the group directories, complete the form:

Register – – – >Co-op, Support or Tutorial Directory

Register – – – >Extracurricular

Memphis Zoo Homeschool Days

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my . . . those are just a few things you will see when you go to the Memphis Zoo. If you happen to visit on one of the Memphis Zoo Homeschool Days, you will see and do a whole lot more.

”Meet live animals, participate in hands-on activities, and get a guided tour of exhibits.”

The Memphis Zoo has been hosting Homeschool Days for a number of years. Children tour areas of the zoo to learn about different animals and then return to a classroom setting for even more learning. FAFSA Frenzy Workshops to the Rescue

January 3, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

When I think of financial aid and excitement, the two never intersect. Excitement brings thoughts of something to look forward to that is going to be a lot of fun. Financial aid conjures piles of paperwork that must be completed by a deadline that is impossible to meet. In steps FAFSA Frenzy workshops across the state to assist students in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application. If your child is a senior in high school or already attending college or plans to return to college in the fall, attending a FAFSA Frenzy workshop is a step in the right direction.

Saturday, February 1, 2020 is the last day to submit the FAFSA application to receive financial aid for the 2020-2021 school year. Completing the FAFSA application is also a requirement to remain eligible for students who applied for the TN Promise scholarship.

At the workshop, students will have access to computers for submitting the online application, which takes about 30 minutes to finish. They will also receive on-site assistance with any questions regarding completing the application.

Suggested items for the student and parents to bring to a workshop to make completing the application easier are the following:

  • 2018 Federal Tax Return (also for the student if they worked)
  • Social Security Number(s)
  • Driver’s License (if any)
  • 2018 W‐2 Forms
  • 2018 untaxed income records, such as child support received and veterans non‐education benefits
  • Current information on checking and savings account balances; stock, bond, and other investments; and business and farm assets
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, bring your alien registration card
  • Student’s FSA ID (apply for your FSA ID)
  • Parent’s FSA ID (apply for your FSA ID)

If you do not have all of these items, you may still attend a FAFSA Frenzy workshop. Attending a workshop is not required to complete the form. The workshops are held to assist students and parents who may be unfamiliar with the FAFSA process and the opportunities it offers students. The workshops are free and you do not have to be a current or prospective student of the college or university where you attend the workshop. You may also complete the FAFSA application online at home by visiting the website.

This cheat sheet may help. This is a worksheet and will not be accepted as a submitted application. Print it out, fill it out and log into your FAFSA account to enter the information.

Jewelry Making at the Metal Museum

Having a child with a birthday in the same month as Christmas means you have to be a bit creative when it comes to gift giving. Teens know what they want (I have to ask) and that makes it difficult to surprise them with that special gift. Lily did receive some “stuff” for Christmas and her birthday, but I also wanted to treat her to an experience. So, we headed to the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis this past weekend, so she could experience a different type of jewelry making. Her gift was to take the “Make Your Own: Multiple Link Jewelry” class.

Metal Museum

The Metal Museum has been on our list of places to visit for a while. Being a writer, I consider myself a creative. I also enjoy sewing and taking pictures. I will admit those skills are a far cry from creating fine metalwork, but you never know what you can do or what you will enjoy until you try.

The “Make Your Own: Multiple Link Jewelry” taught us how to make wire links to create our own jewelry. No previous metalwork skills were required.

The class is one for anyone with no or some or much metalwork experience.

Instructor Lori Gipson (Metal Museum Education and Community Engagement Manager) shared a bit of history about the Metal Museum, which was quite interesting. After that, the linking and jewelry making began.

The class was extremely relaxed. Although we had a project to complete, there were no expectations (no pressure) to finish something.

We had the option of working with brass and/or copper. The use of either is more of a personal preference. Lily chose brass and I chose copper. Wire gauge options were 20, 18 and 16. The lower the gauge, the thicker the wire. Lily chose 20 gauge and I chose 18 gauge to use for making our own links.

Lori made the class fun and easy to understand, walking us through the steps of link making. All the supplies we needed, wire (raw/bare) and pliers, were provided.

Before starting any project, you must have a vision. Putting it on paper enables you to see where you are going and also works as a template for the links you make.

Depending on your skill level, you may end up where you planned to go. Other times, you end up where the link you actually make takes you.

Although there is room for creativity in metalwork (especially during the actual design – shaping the metal), being committed to your original design enables you to finish what you envisioned.

WIth 16 gauge wire, Lily meticulously shaped a clasp using a round nose plier.

It was the perfect finish to her beautiful bracelet.

Lily and I both enjoyed an afternoon making links and jewelry at the Metal Museum. The museum offers classes every month as well as the weekend hands-on classes. Check out “Make Your Own: Recycled Assemblages”, which will be offered on Saturday, January 26, at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

We are looking forward to returning to the museum in the spring for two Homeschool Roster field trips. Along with a tour of the museum, grounds and a forging demonstration, we will have another opportunity to be creative with a hands-on bracelet making class. We would love for you to join us.
