Express Yourself Through The Color of Music Art Contest

December 29, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

When listening to music, several pictures may come to mind depending upon the tune, the instruments used in the music and the personal experiences of the listener. The interpretation of a piece of music is not the same from one person to another. Through the annual The Color of Music art contest, students are able to express themselves using artwork as their voice to share their interpretation of a piece of music.

The Color of Music is presented by the Jackson Symphony League for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade. It is in its twenty-second year with the goals of:

• Providing an opportunity for listening to and visually interpreting classical music.
• Increasing awareness of The Jackson Symphony and familiarize students with repertoires presented by The Jackson Symphony.
• Encouraging a lifelong appreciation of symphonic music by young people.

Each year, students across West Tennessee have shared their artistic talent and creativity producing beautiful artwork that has brought to life the number of music selections chosen over the years for the contest. The music selections for this year are “What is Life”, by George Harrison and “Imagine” by John Lennon. Students are to listen to the music and choose one piece to interpret through art.

Students do not have to be skilled or trained artists to participate in the competition. The student is challenged to share his interpretation, which alone is art.

There are a number of categories for which students will be recognized with prizes including cash, T-shirts, art supplies and symphony tickets. Student winners will be presented at the awards ceremony on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. Finalist entries will be on display at the center in the lobby. The winning pieces of The Jackson Symphony League Bravo Award; the Conductor Awards; Blue Ribbon and Honorable Mention Awards will be displayed at the Le Bonheur Hospital in Jackson. All prize-winning artwork will also be available online for viewing.

If your homeschool student would like to participate, please contact Jennifer Smeltser to receive the contest packet. All art submissions must be submitted to Jennifer Smeltser by Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Read the rules, so you may learn how your student may participate. The contest is open to students in Madison County and its surrounding counties (i.e.: Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Gibson, Hardeman, Haywood, Madison, McNairy and Weakley) only.

Can You Design the Farm of the Future?

February 25, 2018 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

Picture this . . . a farm of the future. Can you see it? If not yet, maybe your child can visualize it and bring it to life through a creative art form for the Ag Day Student Art Contest 2018. The focus this year is the Farm of the Future, which compliments the 2018 National Ag Day theme, “How Agriculture Will Feed the World”

Being in the here and now, ones attention may be on how we feed people today, but, hopefully, the future is coming and we need to be ready. Agriculture has been one of the main sources for our food supply. Despite the challenges of weather and other natural disasters, agriculture has been consistent for many years and one on which we can depend. Improvements and advancements in the area continue to be made and we need to keep the ideas coming. Advances in technology, genetics and biology have opened the doors to thinking beyond what is possible today in agriculture to the possibilities of the future. Children of today will be the visionaries of tomorrow. The 2018 Ag Day Art Contest opens the door for them to imagine the possibilities of the future of agriculture and its importance in our lives.

The 2018 Ag Day Art Contest is open to third through twelfth grade students in the Shelby and Desoto Counties. There are three contestant categories:

Category 1: Third through sixth grades
Category 2: seventh through ninth grades
Category 3: tenth through twelfth grades

Creativity is encouraged and students have the opportunity to use one of the following mediums for their submission*:

• Drawing
• Painting
• Collage
• Photography
• Graphic Design
• Short Video (three to three minutes)

Cash prizes will be awarded to First Place ($100), Second Place ($50) and Third Place ($25) Winners. Teachers who have first place winners will receive $100 each. All teachers will receive an entry, for each competing student, in the drawing for a $250 prize that may be used to purchase art supplies for the classroom.

All art submissions are due to the Agricenter by Friday, March 9, 2018. They may be mailed to the Agricenter International ,7777 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, Tennessee 38120. Video submissions may be mailed, hand-delivered or e-mailed to Tim Roberts {trobert6@utk.edu} through We Transfer (use the free version).

The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 29, at the Agricenter. Teachers do not have to be present to win the random drawing.

If you have questions, call Tim Roberts at (901) 435-7109 or E-mail Tim Roberts or call Melisa Knirr at (901) 435-7112 or E-mail: Melisa Knirr or call Marilyn Kennedy at (901) 435-7100.

Read the contest rules.

*Note all submissions become the property of the Agricenter International and will not be returned.

The Jackson Symphony League has presented the Color of Music Art Contest for 20 years. The art contest is open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade with the goals of:

“•Providing an opportunity for listening to and visually interpreting classical music.

For the past three years, Homeschool Roster has provided a means for homeschool students to participate in the contest. This year, there were eight homeschool students – Alyssa Basham, Ruthie Freeman, Alex Harrison, Zane Harrison, Evangeline Holmes, Issac Holmes, Bethany Knott and Caylee Knott – who participated and four of them received winner ribbons and a T-shirt for their art pieces.

Let Them Be Creative: WLJT Writers Contest

March 16, 2017 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

wljt_writers_contestXX

Do you have an aspiring young writer or illustrator? WLJT is holding its annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest for children in kindergarten through third grades. The contest is “based on the Reading Rainbow® Young Writers and Illustrators Contest” and in the past has only been open to lower elementary age children. This year, WLJT is partnering with Discovery Park of America and opening the contest to fourth and fifth grade students too. And yes, homeschoolers are able to participate.

All eligible children are encouraged to participate in the contest for the chance to author a winning piece as well as win a number of prizes that include Sky Zone passes, McDonald’s gift certificates, Jackson Generals tickets, Walmart gift cards, books, arts and crafts supplies and more. To add to the excitement, the winners of the fourth and fifth grade contest will receive a one-year membership to Discovery Park of America.

This is an opportunity for children who already have a passion for writing and love to bring their stories to life on the written page. It is also a chance for a student who may not enjoy writing, but loves art and can bring their pictures to life with words. When given some time, putting words together to tell a story is not as difficult as it may seem.

Authors may submit a story (fact or fiction) or prose or poetry. Students in kindergarten and first grade must use a minimum of 50 words and a maximum of 200. Second and third graders must use a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 350. Fourth and fifth grade students must use a minimum of 100 words and have a maximum of 500. Submissions must also have at least five original illustrations. This is a great writing and fine arts exercise (assignment 😉 ) for children.

Contestants will be graded on the following criteria:

40% Creativity and originality of plot and/or themes
40% Story structure and use of literary devices
20% Relevance, quality and originality of illustration

So, get your children working on that story, prose or poetry now, because all submissions must be delivered or postmarked by Friday, March 31. Remember these are two different contests. The postmarked submission deadline to WLJT, P.O. Box 966, Martin, TN 38237 is Friday, March 31.

First through third grade contest
Read the complete contest rules for the first through third grade contest.

The teachers of the First Place winners and the teacher with the largest class submissions will also be winners.

Fourth and fifth grade contest
Read the complete contest rules and entry form for the fourth through fifth grade contest.

Design the Hatchie Fall Fest 2016 T-shirt

April 4, 2016 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

hatchie_fall_fest280Showing off your best creativity could place your artwork on the front of the official 12th Annual Hatchie Fall Fest T-shirts that will be worn by festival goers and anyone else who has a keen sense for fashion. The design competition is open to everyone, so that includes you and the only requirement is the words “Hatchie Fall Fest” must be incorporated into your design.

The Hatchie Fall Fest has been held annually in Brownsville, Tennessee on the third Saturday of October for 13 years. Although the festival is a community event and highlights the best of Brownsville and Haywood County, people from all over Tennessee and beyond attend. Hatchie Fall Fest is a family-fun and free-to-attend day full of music, children’s activities, arts and crafts, wrestling, cake and pie competitions and so much more. The art contest is another was to promote community and the annual festival. Artists are encouraged to submit entries for the contest, but you do not have to be a skilled or highly recognized artist to compete.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to showcase their creativity and I hope an encouragement to those with artistic talents to pursue their passion,” said Sonya Clark. Director of the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville. “Expressing yourself through art is a great way to connect for youth and adults.”

Clark is one of the many dedicated volunteers who put on the annual festival in Brownsville where the center is located. The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center offers a number of opportunities for you to learn more about the Brownsville and Haywood County community. Did you know the oldest synagogue – Son Bonds, Tina Turner and Jarvis Varnado all have roots in Brownsville? That should be plenty to give you inspiration to design the winning T-shirt, which would earn you:

• $100 cash
• Four (4) complimentary t-shirts.
• Recognition on the Festival websites with a link to artist website, if applicable.
• Recognition throughout the festival.

“We will display all entries during the month of October (maybe before) and while the festival is in Brownsville. We love all of West Tennessee and want to create a family friendly atmosphere for everyone,” said Clark.

Artists may submit one entry, with up to a maximum of three colors and using any medium. Consideration should be given to the artwork being used on light and dark colored shirts. Along with the name of the event, it is suggested artists include “Brownsville, Tennessee” and “2016” in their artwork. Submissions are due by Sunday, May 1 and may be delivered electronically or by mail or hand.

Electronically: E-mail to info@hatchiefallfest.com. Entries should have the subject line “T-shirt Design Contest.” Accepted files are ai., eps. or pdf files, which are preferred, but .psd or high resolution .jpegs are fine as well. Include your name, address, telephone number and age (if 18 or under).

By mail or hand: Delta Heritage Center, Attn: Sonia Clark, 121 Sunny Hill Cove, Brownsville, TN 38012.

Read more about the contest. Call (731) 779-9000 for more information.

Deadline approaching for Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards

December 8, 2015 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

mid_southThe Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards presents an opportunity for serious art students, in seventh through twelfth grades, to compete for cash prizes and scholarships. The contest, which was created in 1965 as the Junior Mid-South Exhibition, receives more than 2,000 entries each year. The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has partnered with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers since 1989 in presenting the competition that sees artwork in a variety of categories including drawing; graphic design; fashion; film; mixed media; painting; photography; sculpture; senior portfolios and more (see all categories). Submissions are accepted Wednesday, September 16 through Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 10:59 CST (more detailed deadline schedule). Students may submit new artwork that has been created from January through December 2015.

Judging is done digitally, so it is advised to send high quality art submissions. This will allow the full integrity of the artwork to be displayed. Blind judging will be used, so do not include any personal information (ex: signature) on your work. The judging takes place Monday through Friday, January 4-8, 2016.

Students may easily submit their artwork online, which must be done by Tuesday, December 15. The video below gives you some instructions on how to photograph your work to present your piece in the best manner.

Writing and art submissions are $5 per individual submissions and $20 per portfolio. There are accommodations for students if they are unable to afford the fee.

Seniors who earn National Medals are eligible to receive scholarships through colleges and universities that partner with the awards program. More than $250,000 in awards and scholarships is given annually to top Awards recipients and their educators.

Winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 12 at 12 p.m. If you have a question, some of these answers may help you. If you have more questions, e-mail Elesha Newberry or call (901) 544-6243 for more information.

Do you have an appreciation of art, but not the skill? You may visit the Brooks Museum and go on a self-guided tour of pieces entered in the Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards. The 2016 Mid-South Scholastic Exhibition will be on display Saturday, January 30 through Sunday, February 28, 2016. Call Ms. Newberry for a reservation, because tour spaces go quickly.
