The Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards presents an opportunity for serious art students, in seventh through twelfth grades, to compete for cash prizes and scholarships. The contest, which was created in 1965 as the Junior Mid-South Exhibition, receives more than 2,000 entries each year. The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has partnered with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers since 1989 in presenting the competition that sees artwork in a variety of categories including drawing; graphic design; fashion; film; mixed media; painting; photography; sculpture; senior portfolios and more (see all categories). Submissions are accepted Wednesday, September 16 through Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 10:59 CST (more detailed deadline schedule). Students may submit new artwork that has been created from January through December 2015.
Judging is done digitally, so it is advised to send high quality art submissions. This will allow the full integrity of the artwork to be displayed. Blind judging will be used, so do not include any personal information (ex: signature) on your work. The judging takes place Monday through Friday, January 4-8, 2016.
Students may easily submit their artwork online, which must be done by Tuesday, December 15. The video below gives you some instructions on how to photograph your work to present your piece in the best manner.
Writing and art submissions are $5 per individual submissions and $20 per portfolio. There are accommodations for students if they are unable to afford the fee.
Seniors who earn National Medals are eligible to receive scholarships through colleges and universities that partner with the awards program. More than $250,000 in awards and scholarships is given annually to top Awards recipients and their educators.
Winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 12 at 12 p.m. If you have a question, some of these answers may help you. If you have more questions, e-mail Elesha Newberry or call (901) 544-6243 for more information.
Do you have an appreciation of art, but not the skill? You may visit the Brooks Museum and go on a self-guided tour of pieces entered in the Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards. The 2016 Mid-South Scholastic Exhibition will be on display Saturday, January 30 through Sunday, February 28, 2016. Call Ms. Newberry for a reservation, because tour spaces go quickly.
