Do you have a child who plays an instrument or would like to learn how to play one? Consider the Oakland Homeschool Band and Orchestra, which returns in August. Instruments include band (baritone, bass guitar, bassoon, clarinet, flute, French horn, oboe, percussion, saxophone, trombone, trumpet and tuba), strings (cello, upright bass, viola and violin) and acoustic guitar instruments. If you don’t see an instrument, just ask, because instructor Benny Morton (Mr. Benny) just may be able to teach it. A new class, Music Theory, has been added this school year.
Classes will be held at Oakland First Baptist Church (8695 U.S. 64, Somerville, 38068). You do not have to live in Oakland to participate.
The class schedules are as follows:
Beginner Band/Orchestra, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Beginner Guitar, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Intermediate Orchestra, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Orchestra, 3 p.m. – 4:25 p.m.
Music Theory, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Beginner Band/Orchestra, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.
The beginner classes will be taught in the fall and continue with intermediate classes, which are taught in the spring. There will also be an opportunity for choir that will be offered. More details regarding that will be available at a later date.
The fee is $75 for the first semester and $50 for the second semester. Returning families will pay $50 per semester. If you have more than one student participating, ask about the sibling discount.
Classes begin Monday, August 21, and the recital date is scheduled for Tuesday, November 28.
For more information, you may contact the instructor, Benny Morton, at (662) 501-6496 (text/call).
