You do not have to be a lover of Nissan or its cars to enjoy and learn from this educational field trip. We are going to be given a back-door pass to the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant to see how they put their cars together. The day will be paired with a visit to the Lane Motor Museum (Thursday field trips only), which specializes in European cars from 1924 to a 2003 Mercedes Smart Car. The museum started with 70 cars in 2002 and now has more than 400 vehicles in its collection. Although we will not see all 400 cars, we will see plenty with its current exhibits that include:

Macchine Italiano: A Tour of Italy’s Motoring
The Cars of Borgward
Microcar Exhibit
The Lane Family Cars
100 Years of Leyat

Although you may not understand what happens underneath the hood of your car, I guarantee this field trip will be interesting, educational, fun and cool.

Venue: Lane Motor Museum, 702 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville, 37210

Suggested age: You must be 10 years old or older (no exceptions, per Nissan) to go on the Nissan Factory tour, but all ages are able to tour the Lane Motor Museum.

Date: Tuesday, April 11, 2017
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Nissan)

Date: Thursday, April 13, 2017
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Nissan)
Time: 12 p.m. (Lane Motor Museum)

Date: Thursday, April 27, 2017
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Nissan)
Time: 12 p.m. (Lane Motor Museum)

NOTES: If you attend the Thursday field trip, you may go on one or both of the tours. Example, your child may be too young for the Nissan tour, but would like to visit the motor museum. The Lane Motor Museum is a Thursday only field trip, because it is closed on Tuesdays.

Admission: Admission to the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant is free. Admission to the Lane Motor Museum is $3 for children (ages six through 17) and $6 for adults. Children five and under are free.

A little bit more of Peter Pan.

Schedule: Meet at the Nissan Factory or Lane Motor Museum at 9:30 a.m. (depending on the field trip day) to check-in with the event leader and get settled. After the first tour, we will move to the next tour location (if applicable) to complete the day.

Let your children take this quiz before attending the field trip. See how much they know about car emblems. Can they identify these cars?

Reservation deadline: Reservations will be accepted through Monday, March 20, 2017 for the April 11 and 13 field trips and through Monday, April 24, 2017 for the April 27 field trip. Once the spaces fill, reservations will close. To make a reservation, click here to e-mail Homeschool Roster your request. Please include the number of children and adults that will attend. You will receive an e-mail response the following weekend confirming receipt of your reservation. No reservation funds will be issued after the closing dates listed above for each field trip date.

Homeschool Roster has made special arrangements for us to attend as a group. The field trip is open to those currently or considering homeschooling and their families. Please feel free to share the event with other homeschoolers.
