Free Vooks All Year Long

September 2, 2019 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

Homeschoolers love freebies (almost everyone does) and Vooks is offering you, homeschool teacher, a freebie: one free year of Vooks.

You are probably asking yourself, what is Vooks. Well, I did too. Simply put, Vooks is a streaming service that “that brings children’s books to life with animated illustrations, read-a-long text and narrated story.” The books are geared towards children who are ages two through eight years old. Vooks is a pretty good alternative for them during screen time. Reading (or watching a book be read) rather than playing video games. I opt for the former. When you scroll through some of the book selections, you are bound to find some familiar titles that include classics as well a newer published titles.

A subscription is regularly $4.99, but for a limited time, teachers may subscribe for free. It’s Vooks way of saying “thank you to all of the incredible teachers of the world!” Click here to receive your free gift. Don’t delay, because the offer ends on Sunday, September 15, 2019.

The special prices are available only at Entrance 3, Homeschool, FFA & 4-H check-in booth, which is at the front of the Agricenter. Enter the area off Walnut Grove to be directed to the correct area and where to park, which is $5. There is no re-entry after 7 p.m. and you will have to pay again for parking if you leave the lot.

Along with the many planned events on Homeschool Day at the fair, there are opportunities for your children to participate in a number of competitions as a group (if they are active in DECA, FCCLA, FFA or 4-H) or as an individual.

2015_0729_6463hr

It’s back! It’s back. The Pink Palace Family of Museums is again offering a summer trial membership, which will gain you access into its museums. The offer is for 90 days access and there is no fee for anything, which I’m glad. You may remember when the trial offer was originally for 90 days. That is good for people like me who live a distance and need the entire summer to make it to the museum. You will be able to visit the Pink Palace Museum, the Historic Properties and the Lichterman Nature Center, but the reciprocal museums are not included. If you plan to travel, you may purchase a full membership, which grants you entry privileges into a number of museums across the country.

The free 90-day Summer Trial Membership is valid for two adults and up to 10 related children who are 17 years old or younger. The membership is a personal family membership, which expires 90 days from the day you sign up. You must sign up by Friday, May 31, 2019 to take advantage of the offer. If you wait until the last day, you will have membership access until Saturday, August 31, 2019. We usually wait until the last day to sign up just to be sure we get to enjoy the museums up until the last date of offer. If you want to start using your trial membership now, sign up today!

2015_0729_6458hr

The membership also offers access to the Trial Membership Party, which will be held in July; a savings of $1 on each ticket for the Planetarium Tickets, CTI 3D Movie Tickets and Combo CTI 3D/Planetarium and a 10 percent discount at Bella Caffe and in the Pink Palace Museum Store (audio, video and clearance are not included).

2015_0729_6424hr

Remember, the opportunity to sign up for the trial membership ends Friday, May 31. You may register again this year even if you have used a trial membership in a previous year. Registration is easy and can only be done online. Once you hit the submit button, your membership card will be immediately available and ready to use. Get your membership now!

Do you have more questions? Read here to see if they are answered. If not, call (901) 636-2362 for more information.

Free Bowling and Skating Fun for Kids

May 16, 2018 by Jennifer Smeltser Leave a Comment

kids bowl and skate freeSummer is not far away and it is already time to start thinking about activities for our children to do. For many children, summer signifies sleeping in and spending the remaining waking hours on electronics playing video games, watching television, texting and anything else that can be done while in a reclined position. If figuring out ways to keep your children physically active during the summer months is challenging, I have got some ideas for you and both are free.

Kids Bowl Free and Kids Skate Free are two individual summer programs that provide an opportunity for children to get up, get out, exercise and have some fun. Children registered in the bowling program receive two free games per day at the participating center. The skating program allows participants to skate free during specified hours using issued program passes.

Both bowling and skating can be enjoyed by children of all skill levels from the first-time player or skater to the more skilled in either sport. Participation in one or both programs will provide regular exercise, help your child burn calories and give them an alternative to being sedentary during summer vacation.

There are several locations throughout the United States participating in both programs with centers and rinks across the country. You must register with the locations you want to use. Below is a list of participating bowling centers and skating rinks in Tennessee. Check the participating location to learn the days your child may bowl and skate for free, as well as the age of child that may participate in the programs. Most centers only cater to young children. A skate or bowling shoe rental fee may apply.

apologia_back_school240It is kind of cool when you find a trusted company to use for most of your homeschool needs. Apologia is just one of those companies. I was introduced to them about six years ago and it is amazing to see how the company has grown. At this point in our school, I have just about every book Apologia has published. Some, we are using this school year and others are on schedule for future grades. I like to prepare ahead of time.

Did you know Apologia has a great sale and a perk it is offering through Friday, August 5? Apologia is offering 25 percent off on all purchases as well as $5 shipping special. Both specials are ones that are only offered at a convention and you can shop online and from home and received the same discounts. How cool is that?

Apologia has products in several subject areas that include Bible and world view, geography/history and civics, language arts and science. To help homeschoolers get started on a great school year, Apologia also has planners, homeschool helps and books of encouragement. Some new items include Writers in Residence by Debra Bell and American Literature for high school that was written by Whit Jones, who is a professor at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. See all of the Apologia products.

This year, we will be using several Apologia published books in our school. Some of them are Writers in Residence, General Science, What We Believe, Exploring Creation Zoology: Land Animals. I am totally excited to be using the new Astronomy book which we will also review.

If you are still looking for curriculum for your new school year or purchase ahead (like me) for another school year, don’t miss taking advantage of this great sale. I am glad I waited to purchase some of the books I need for this fall. I always like saving some money. Start saving now
