DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\nThere is no better way to kick off the new school year than with a pool party. Homeschool Roster is returning to Thornton’s Pool for our annual Back-to-Home School Splash. We want to have some fun and celebrate the beginning of a new school year. We think Thornton’s Pool is the place to do it. If you have ever had the opportunity to swim\, jump from the rope swing\, hold your position on the balance deck\, or hang out on the rocks (and that isn’t everything)\, we think you will agree.\n\nThornton’s has a larger pool area (main pool) and a smaller wading pool for little children to use. The larger pool starts at about four feet shallow. There are plenty of lounge chairs (under a covered area or out under the sun) for parents (and grandparents) who may not want to swim or prefer to watch. \n  \nTHERE WILL BE NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY! \n  \nSUGGESTED AGE/GRADE\nThe suggested age/grade is preschool through high school students\, and adults. \nATTIRE\nSwimsuits should be trunks for boys and men and one piece or modest two piece swim suits for girls and women. T-shirts may also be worn with trunks (for boys and men) or with the one or modest two piece swim suits (for girls and women). \nNOTES\nThornton’s Pool is a private residence. There will be pets (ex: dogs – roaming\, and llamas and groundhogs contained) on property on the day of the event. If you have children (or you) who are afraid of animals\, please keep that in mind before registering to attend. This is a rain or shine event. If you think you will want to get in the water (or dip your feet in the pool)\, you should pay the admission fee\, so you will have that option. One parking space will be allotted for each family registration. Shelly & Sons\, a staple in the City for more than 100 years. We will learn its impact on a community as a one-stop location for all mercantile needs. We will move to the Middleton mural for a presentation by muralist\, who will share the vision behind the mural and the process she followed to bring the history to life with the stroke of her paint brush. The tour will continue to the Green Frog\, which is in a building that formally was the City police station\, depot\, and inn. DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\nWe will have three S.T.E.M. experiences during our field trip\, and your children and you will be able to do them all! \nSoil Texture\nIn this program\, students will learn all about soil texture and how it can indicate how well the soil can hold nutrients and water that plants need to grow! Using soil sieves\, students will get to investigate and examine their soil samples. They will then use math to determine the composition of the soil and classify it with a Soil Texture Triangle Chart! \nLife Under a Log\nOur Life Under a Log program invites students to become investigators of nature. Students will put on their entomologist hats and head to the woods to discover a plethora of insects in their natural habitats. Students will investigate above\, below\, and inside a decomposing log for decomposers\, consumers\, and producers. They will learn about the interactions between insects within a certain ecosystem \, food webs\, and nature’s ability to recycle. This program gives students a look at the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Students will be able to bring insect specimens back to the S.T.E.M. building and use the DinoLite to analyze them more closely. Students will be able to see the external and possibly the internal structures an insect uses for survival\, growth\, behavior\, and reproduction. This program is a hands-on activity meant for students to connect with nature. Students will get dirty and will experience holding nature’s finest. \nTransits/Compass Mapping & Orienteering \n\nTransits: If your students need a real world example of slopes and erosion\, this program is a great addition to the classroom. Students will be instructed in how to use a transit level\, an optical instrument\, or a telescope\, complete with a built-in spirit level that is mounted on a tripod\, and is a great asset Lone Oaks Farm has for teaching slopes. Transit levels are used mainly in surveying to determine differences in surface or object height for construction projects\, farming or plumbing and utility installations where it is necessary to determine slope\, but they can be used to determine the relative position of lines and objects and provide readings of angles in precise measurements. Students will first establish a reference line\, with subsequent readings taken at various distances and use basic mathematical calculations to determine the difference from the data collected. Students will need to use teamwork to collect data to determine the angles of a slope using basic math and logic skills. Students will then learn how to take the collected data and translate the data to find the connection between slope of a landscape\, water runoff\, erosion\, and sediment control — bringing science and math to life. \nCompass Mapping & Orienteering: The world is a vast space of adventure and discovery but it can be overwhelming to find your place in the world when you’re young. In this program\, your students will learn vital map reading skills and navigation proficiencies\, all while using the math concepts from the classroom. Despite the popularity of the digital mapping programs\, paper maps are still widely used for many jobs and outdoor recreation. The Discovering Your Own Destiny (DYOD) experiences were created\, so your teen can plan for their future/life after high school. They will learn about post-secondary opportunities\, careers that are open to them as well as non-traditional paths. \nWe will tour the WBBJ Eyewitness News 7 station and learn about the news and television industry\, and career opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to experience delivering the news and practice other similar skills. The tour is geared towards high school students. \nSUGGESTED AGE/GRADE\nThe tour is for high school students and one parent/guardian. If you have a middle school student (sixth through eighth grade) who would also like to tour\, please register for one of the middle school tours.
