Presenting 2026 Homeschool Graduate Francessca Boyd

Francessca Boyd is an independent homeschool student, has been homeschooled for 10 years, and is the big sister to four siblings. Family is very important to Francessca, and she especially enjoyed the amount of time homeschooling allowed her to spend with her grandparents. Francessca described homeschooling as like being on a roller coaster of mixed emotions—freedom on some days and frustration on others—but most importantly, it helped her grow into the person she is today.
She shared what she enjoyed about homeschool, the experiences and memories, some tips, her future plans, and favorite places to visit in West Tennessee.
CHALLENGES: Some challenges I faced were feeling lonely, unmotivated, or like I was behind or missing out. I overcame this by staying focused on my goals, keeping a routine, getting involved in volunteering and mentorships, and spending time with my cousins and best friends to stay socially connected. I also learned to give myself grace and lean on my faith to stay encouraged and keep going.
BENEFITS:
One thing I enjoyed most about being homeschooled was the flexibility and ability to learn at my own pace. It helped me better understand subjects without feeling pressured or left behind, which made me more confident in my learning. I was able to focus more on my education, challenge myself with honors courses, and explore my interests without the distractions of a traditional school setting. Homeschooling also gave me opportunities to volunteer, gain real-world experience, and develop independence and self-discipline.
Homeschooling helped prepare me for my future and interests by giving me the flexibility to focus on opportunities outside of the classroom. It allowed me to visit colleges during regular school days, participate in volunteer work and mentorships related to my career interests, and gain experiences I probably would not have been able to do in a traditional school setting. It also helped me become more independent, manage my time better, and work while saving money for my future.
Some of my extracurricular activities and groups included volunteering with the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Explore Program and at my local library. I also participated in mentorship opportunities, visited colleges, and stayed socially active by spending time with family. In addition, I’ve been involved in ballet, jujutsu, and gymnastics, and I’m currently learning how to play the guitar.
Homeschooling has helped me grow both academically and personally by teaching me independence, self-discipline, and responsibility. During high school, I worked and had opportunities many kids would only dream of, and I am extremely grateful for them. Although there were times I didn’t always enjoy homeschooling, I don’t regret the experience because it helped shape who I am today. Graduating feels a little scary because it’s such a big change, but I’m very proud of myself for reaching this milestone and accomplishing my goals.
I received recognition from the National Honor Society and The Congress of Future Medical Leaders, a signature program of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, which I was invited to and plan to attend this summer. I received the $25,000 “Be Bold” Scholarship and the $25,000 Niche Scholarship Award. In addition, I am proud of my academic progress, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and personal growth throughout my homeschool journey.
I’m most proud of the independence and responsibility I developed through homeschooling, especially while being a big sister. Balancing my schoolwork while helping care for and support my younger siblings taught me patience, leadership, and time management. I love my siblings so much, and being able to spend extra time with them through homeschooling helped strengthen our bond and taught me how important family is to me. Being someone they can look up to and rely on is one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of.
Homeschooling can be a great option for families because it allows for a flexible, personalized learning experience where students can learn at their own pace and explore their interests more deeply. It also gives more freedom for things like college visits, volunteering, extracurricular activities, and real-life learning during the day. However, it does require consistency, planning, and support from parents to keep students on track academically and socially. Many families also join homeschool groups or activities to stay connected.
FAVORITE MEMORY: One of my favorite homeschool memories is getting to spend so much time with my grandparents because they were always so patient with me, even in situations where they didn’t have to be. Some of my favorite days were playing games like Uno and Tic-Tac-Toe with my grandpa, watching movies and shows together like Cars, Inside Out, and cowboy horror movies, and just enjoying being together. I also loved gardening with my grandma and learning about different trees and plants from her. I will always hold these memories dear, and I’m very grateful homeschooling gave me the time to experience them.
TIPS FOR STUDENTS: One important tip for homeschool students is to stay determined and focused, even when you feel like you’re behind, not doing enough, or missing out. It’s totally normal to feel lonely sometimes but remember you’re not just going through school—you’re building your future, and you’re only promised a diploma, not the same experience as everyone else. It’s okay to feel that way, but don’t let it stop you. Stay consistent, give yourself grace, and keep your goals in mind. Most importantly, lean on your faith. God is always with you through every season.
TIPS FOR PARENTS: Some tips for homeschool parents are to create a consistent routine, stay organized with lessons, and be patient with the learning process. It’s important to encourage independence while still offering support when needed. Also, make sure your child has social opportunities like volunteering, group activities, or time with family and friends so they don’t feel isolated. Most importantly, give grace both to your child and yourself, and stay flexible because every student learns differently.
FUTURE: After high school, I plan to attend college and continue my education in the medical field with the goal of becoming either an OB-GYN or an anesthesiologist. I have always been interested in healthcare and helping others, especially women and families during important moments in their lives. I am passionate about making a positive impact through compassion, dedication, and medical care. One of my biggest life goals is to help people in underserved communities, especially within the black community and among women, because they are often underrepresented and overlooked in healthcare. I want to be someone patients can trust, relate to, and feel comfortable with while receiving quality care. Through hard work, education, and determination, I hope to build a successful career where I can make a difference in the lives of others and inspire future generations to pursue careers in medicine as well.
