SCHS Offers Summer Volleyball Training and Clinics

Shelby County Homeschool Sports (SCHS) was created to provide an athletic opportunity for homeschool students with an interest in playing volleyball. Since its inception in 2021, the independent athletic program has grown from one 18U team and one 14U team to offering volleyball for elementary to high school students throughout the West Tennessee area. As the SCHS prepares to move into its sixth season this fall, the program is offering summer volleyball training and clinics to help athletes hone their skills.
“Our summer clinics consist of basic instruction, an opportunity to try out volleyball, and meet other players in our area,” said Marilee Babler of SCHS Volleyball.
There will be training dates and clinics offered in May and June, which will be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Memphis. The training and clinics will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the following days:
Tuesday, May 19
Tuesday, May 26
Tuesday, June 2
Thursday, June 4
Tuesday, June 9
Thursday, June 11
Tuesday, June 16
Thursday, June 18
Tuesday, June 23
Thursday, June 25
Elementary school and middle school students will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and high school students from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. You may register for training and clinics.
During its regular fall season, the SCHS program offers volleyball opportunities for girls in third through twelfth grade and for boys in sixth grade and under in its coed league. The league competes against local homeschool, private school, and public school teams in the Memphis area, as well as in one to two local tournaments. Post season, the league attends a regional homeschool tournament as well as the National Christian Homeschool Volleyball Championships (NCHVC) in Kansas.
“Our volleyball program welcomes players of all skills. We desire to provide an opportunity for any homeschooled student to participate on a team in a supportive environment. We are a “no-cut” program in that we do not require tryouts to make a team,” said Ms. Babler. “Elementary and middle school students will be placed on a team based on age. Our sixth grade team overlaps with middle school, and we ask high school students to attend ‘player evaluations’ in order to be placed on our varsity or junior varsity teams based on skill level.”
Over the years, the SCHS has achieved recognition on the court with championship wins, which include NCHVC 18u D3 Gold Ball winner, 14U 1st place Wild West Tournament (2022); NCHVC 14U Gold Ball winner (2024); and Regional 18U champions (2025). The league has also had three players go on to play at the collegiate level, two in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and one in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) – Division II.
“While we are a sports program, our primary purpose is to allow students to grow as people through relationships while engaging in athletics, regardless of skill level. While we do like to win, we believe it is more important to learn to encourage others, face challenges from wins and loses, grow as a volleyball player, but primarily to grow as a person,” said Ms. Babler.
Regular SCHS season practices are Monday, Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings, depending on the age level. If you are also interested in your child participating with the league during its regular season, the deadlines are Monday, June 8, for middle school and high school and Wednesday, July 1, for elementary school.
The SCHS practices at Immanuel Lutheran Church and School Gym, 6319 Raleigh LaGrange Road, Memphis, 38134.
