Shelby Jackson Awarded Southern Council of Optometrists Endowed Scholarship

Home school graduate Shelby Jackson (formerly Shelby Smith) was recently honored with the Southern Council of Optometrists Endowed Scholarship award. Shelby, a first-year student at Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis, will receive an annual scholarship of $3,000 over the course of the four-year doctorate program at the college.

Shelby, a HomeLife Academy graduate, participated in the West Tennessee Home School Graduation in 2021. She continued her studies at Murray State University in Kentucky from where she graduated in December 2024, with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry, with a focus in pre-optometry. Earlier this year, she married Hunter Jackson, also a home school graduate.

Each year, Southern College of Optometry recognizes its most outstanding first-year students with scholarships through the generosity of alumni, ophthalmic partners. and friends. The award recognizes an optometry student who resides in a Southern Council member state with a competitive undergraduate GPA, OAT scores, admissions interview, and extracurricular activities.
