Civil Rights Icon Ruby Bridges to Appear at Annual Reading Festival

Civil rights icon and author Ruby Bridges will appear at the National Civil Rights Museum’s annual Ruby Bridges Reading Festival, which will be held in Memphis on the museum campus on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The free event will feature Ms. Bridges and two other authors who will read from their books, Ruby Bridges, author I Am Ruby Bridges; Nikkolas Smith, author-illustrator of A Change is Gonna Come; and 15-year old Bellen Woodard, author of Ballet Brown.

Described as a day of learning and community, this is the ninth year the Ruby Bridges Reading Festival has been held. Along with promoting reading, diversity, and community, the festival will give attendees an opportunity to learn about history during the civil rights movement of which Ms. Bridges played a huge part.

Every child who attends the event will have the opportunity to receive a free book for their personal library.
