27th Annual Color of Music Winners Selected

Callie Taylor, a Faith Home School Tutorial student, won the Capriccio Award in the 27th Annual Color of Music art contest.

Callie Taylor, a student at Faith Home School Tutorial, received the Capriccio Award, one of four top recognitions in the 27th Annual Color of Music art contest that is presented by the Jackson Symphony League. The annual art contest is open to West Tennessee students in kindergarten through eighth grade from Madison County and its surrounding counties (i.e.: Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Gibson, Hardeman, Haywood, Madison, McNairy, and Weakley) only. Other homeschool students were also recognized as Blue Ribbon and Honorable Mention winners.

Each year more than 2,000 students from across West Tennessee from public, private, and home schools compete in the contest. Several homeschool students were winners in 2023.

Students do not have to be skilled or trained artists to participate in the competition. They listen to a music piece and are challenged to share their interpretation of that music into artwork.

The music selections this year were from Beethoven Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op 68 with 1st movement:  “Awakening of Cheerful Feelings” and 4th Movement:  “Thunder, Storm”.

Homeschoolers Elizabeth Nadasky (kindergarten) created “Color Tornado”, Honorable Mention; Jasper West (first grade) created “Wolf in the Woods”, Honorable Mention; and Shiloh West (sixth grade) created “A Night at Sea”, Honorable Mention.

Other Faith Tutorial Home School students besides Callie who were recognized include Grant Champine (second grade) with “The King’s Adventure”, Honorable Mention; Emmaline Holmes (first grade) with “Fairy Hollow”, Blue Ribbon; Lia Price (sixth grade) with “Ocean Fury”, Blue Ribbon; Daphine Raab (fifth grade) with “A Bird and It’s Eggs”, Honorable Mention; and Annelynn Tucker (first grade) with “A Story of Hope”, Honorable Mention.

Student winners were invited to attend the Color of Music Awards program that was held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Ned McWherter Cultural Arts Center (the Ned). In this group of homeschool students, there was one of the four top winners; two of the 45 Blue Ribbon winners; and six of the 34 Honorable Mention winners.
