Homeschool Consignment Sale Returns for In-Person Shopping this Summer

The Homeschool Consignment Sale (HCS) returns this summer in June for in-person shopping in Bolivar, Tennessee. The sale originally started as a one-day event in 2021, and due to shopper request, moved to a three-day event, and eventually a full store experience with the doors to the sale staying open as long as two months. Each year, homeschoolers are able to conveniently shop in person and get discounts on gently used and some new curriculum for their school.

The in-person shopping experience gives homeschoolers an opportunity to see, touch, and flip through curriculum they may be considering purchasing for their school. Some of the curriculum shoppers can expect to find are from popular publishers like Apologia, Abeka, The Good and The Beautiful, Math-U-See, Notgrass, and Saxon Math to name a few.

Last year, there were more than 20 homeschool families that consigned items giving shoppers a variety of curricula in different subjects from which to choose for the upcoming and future school years. Along with curriculum, shoppers are able to find DVDs, games, manipulatives, and other items typically used to homeschool. With the sale being held in Bolivar, it attracts consignors and shoppers from both the Jackson and Memphis areas.

This year, new consignors will be accepted, but space is limited. Consignors are able to earn passive income because they are not required to be on-site to sell their items as the HCS handles that for them. Consigning is also a great option for many people because they can get rid of items they no longer use in their home school and can clear those items out of their home or wherever else they are being stored and taking up space. The HCS takes care of the selling and will now offer the continued promotion of those items after the in-person sale is over.

“It has taken a bit of time to get the process started because of the inventory we have, but we are now set up where all items that remain after the in person sale this summer, can be continually promoted to shoppers looking for good deals,” said Jennifer Smeltser who manages the HCS. “The HCS currently has a website and it will be updated after the summer sale so people may conveniently shop online and our consignors can continue to earn money for the items they consign with us.”

The most popular months for homeschoolers to shop for curriculum are late May through August, December, and January. Although a homeschooler can sell their items themselves, once they determine pricing, take pictures, post the items, hope someone wants to purchase the items, and meets or ships the items to the buyer, that can take a lot of time. Not to mention, the storing of those items until all sell.

“The HCS takes those burdens of selling off of its consignors. Since the in-person sale is open to the public, shoppers are not limited to just homeschoolers and include people who want good deals on teaching and learning resources. The shopping audience will grow for those items that are sold on the HCS website,” said Ms. Smeltser who noted the HCS also offers in-person delivery to the Jackson and Memphis areas, as well as items may be shipped.

Some of the comments heard at previous sales from shoppers include:

“It is nice having somewhere local we can actually look at the books before we buy something.”

“I was surprised by all the different curriculum at the sale.”

“I found the rest of what I needed for school.”

If you are interested in becoming a consignor, HCS consignor registration will open on Monday, April 15, 2024, for the summer sale that is expected to welcome in-person shoppers by June 15, 2024. Until that time, follow the HCS Facebook page, so you do not miss HCS updates.
