Lane College Reimagines Educator Preparation

Jackson, TN — Lane College is advancing a bold vision for educator preparation that honors its rich history while positioning the institution to meet the future needs of schools, students, and communities across Tennessee and beyond.
Under the leadership of Dr. Tiffany Hardrick, Assistant Professor, Director of Educator Preparation, and Department Chair, the Education Department is undertaking a comprehensive effort to strengthen enrollment, expand certification pathways, deepen community partnerships, and reaffirm Lane College’s long-standing reputation for preparing outstanding educators.
For generations, Lane College has played an important role in preparing teachers who have served schools and communities throughout the region and across the nation. Today, the College is building upon that foundation with a renewed focus on innovation, workforce development, and student success.
“Education remains one of the most transformative professions in our society,” said Dr. Hardrick. “At Lane College, we are building a program that not only prepares future teachers to earn licensure, but also prepares them to lead, innovate, mentor, and impact communities. Our goal is to create pathways that are accessible, workforce driven, and deeply connected to the needs of schools and students.”
A central component of the department’s vision is expanding access to the teaching profession. In addition to serving traditional education majors, the program is developing pathways that allow students majoring in areas such as mathematics, biology, music, religion, and physical education to pursue teacher licensure through an education minor and residency-based preparation model.
The department is also exploring post-baccalaureate certification opportunities designed for individuals who already hold bachelor’s degrees and seek a pathway into teaching. These efforts will help address teacher shortages while creating opportunities for working professionals, paraprofessionals, career changers, and aspiring educators throughout the region.
Equally important is the department’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with school districts and community organizations. Through enhanced clinical experiences, mentoring opportunities, and residency models, students will gain meaningful classroom experience while building the skills necessary to succeed as educators from their first day on the job.

Another exciting aspect of the vision is the exploration of the proposed Lane College All Male Academy charter campus school. The academy is envisioned as both a transformative educational opportunity for young men and a laboratory school that provides authentic learning experiences for teacher candidates by integrating theory and practice.
This vision also reflects a broader commitment to workforce development and community impact. The department is exploring partnerships that connect early childhood credentials, associate degree pathways, educator preparation, residency experiences, and workforce placement into a seamless talent development pipeline designed to serve West Tennessee and the Mid South region.
“This vision exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking leadership that both honors Lane College’s rich legacy and boldly shapes its future,” said Rev. Dr. Daryll H. Coleman, Division Chair of Religion and Education and Special Assistant to the President. “Dr. Hardrick brings a rare combination of strategic insight, innovation, and a deep understanding of both K through 12 and higher education. The work currently underway reflects a renewed commitment to teacher education as a cornerstone program of the College and reaffirms its distinction as a premier educator preparation program in Tennessee, one that produces caring, committed, culturally responsive, and highly competent teachers who are prepared to lead from day one.”
Dr. Lawrence T. Potter, Jr., Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, believes the renewed focus positions the College for long term success.
“Lane College has long recognized that education serves as one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives, strengthening communities, and advancing society,” said Dr. Potter. “The renewed vision and momentum within our Education Program underscores our unwavering commitment to preparing educators and leaders who are knowledgeable, purpose driven, and committed to service. Through innovative partnerships and expanded opportunities, Lane College is preparing the next generation of educators to meet the needs of Tennessee and beyond.”
The future of educator preparation at Lane College is rooted in a proud tradition of excellence. As the College continues to expand its academic offerings and strengthen community partnerships, the Education Department is positioning itself as a catalyst for educational excellence, workforce development, and transformational leadership for generations to come.
