Presenting 2025 Homeschool Graduate Ava Rhymer

Ava Rhymer is a HomeLife Academy student and started home school in her junior year of high school. She enjoyed the freedom and flexibility home school allows and often took her “school on the road”, which Ava was able to complete in between attending concerts performed by some of her favorite music artists. She shared some of her experiences as a home school student and how she benefited from that choice in education.
BENEFITS: I enjoyed having the freedom to be able to travel and have more time to do the things that I love most, which is art and design. I love art and music, and while the public high school offered chorus, which I thoroughly enjoyed, my true passion for music lies in live music. I love all genres of music (except country) and love attending concerts. In the last two years, I have seen The Cure in Atlanta; Billy Corgan twice in Chicago; the Smashing Pumpkins in Nashville and Southaven; Melanie Martinez in Fort Worth; and Metallica and Green Day in Nashville. I enjoy drawing artists that I love and my artwork has been shared on social media by the Smashing Pumpkins, Canadian-based the Jins, and others. I wouldn’t have been able to attend all of those concerts out-of-state, if I were still in public school.
CHALLENGES: I didn’t experience any challenges with home school. It was a blessing to me to be able to complete my schoolwork from anywhere.
TIPS FOR STUDENTS: if you are interested in subjects that are outside of the traditional subjects offered in public high school, then home school might be just for you! I have always been interested in art and drawing, rather than sports, so there wasn’t a large opportunity for me in public high school, which would allow me to show my creativity.
TIPS FOR PARENTS: Some students just don’t fit in a traditional high school. Whether it is due to curriculum that doesn’t engage them or dealing with other kids that are bullies. For students dealing with this on a daily basis, home school can be a welcome relief. Also coming from public schools, home school can seem overwhelming at first, but find someone that you can talk to about the different options offered and find the perfect fit for your child.
FUTURE: I want to attend the School of Art institute of Chicago to study art and fashion design. I love to combine my love for music with my love of art, so my dream job would be a designer for musicians.
Ava’s West Tennessee Favorites
Favorite place to eat: My favorite place to eat is at the Olive Garden.
Favorite place to go: My favorite place to go is Books-A-Million.
Favorite thing to do: My favorite thing to do is travel to middle Tennessee, specifically Nashville. I do really enjoy seeing historic points of interest in Bolivar (ex: the Columns, the Pillars, etc.) and learning about their history. Also, all of the events that Falcon Ridge Farm has to offer. They have Easter egg hunts, a pumpkin patch, and hayrides along with other things to do all season long. I spent most of my childhood going to events there with my mom or school events, so it is very nostalgic for me.
Congratulations to Ava, who is participating in the Homeschool Roster Homeschool Graduation 2025!
