Tom Lee Park Holding Homeschool Day – Spring Break

Homeschool Day at Tom Lee Park in Memphis, Tennessee will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. And, if it has been a while since you visited the park, you may not recognize the new space. Homeschoolers are invited to visit and experience the newly renovated park on a day just for them.

“The park is completely transformed. If you haven’t been down there since the renovation, you will not recognize where you are,” said George Abbott, Director Of External Affairs · Memphis River Parks Partnership. “We added a lot of trees, a lot of vegetation, and a really fantastic playground with obstructions in the shape of animals from the Mississippi River that you can climb up and down and slide. And there’s a zip line and all sorts of gear. It’s now, I would say, one of the best river parks in the whole country, and it has one of the best playgrounds you have ever seen.”

In December 2020, a $61 million-dollar renovation project was started at Tom Lee Park, which later reopened in September 2023 during the Labor Day Weekend. The park, once flat and open, has become an active space full of engaging experiences throughout every area of its nearly one mile that stretches along the Mississippi River.

“Also added to the park is a multi-purpose court. Sometimes it’s basketball, sometimes it is yoga or fitness classes. There is public art honoring Tom Lee’s legacy . . . it’s really kind of restored nature to the space as well. A lot of native plants and a lot of pollinator plantings,” said Abbott.

On Homeschool Day, families may pick up passports from the Welcome Center featuring the individual partners that will have interactive learning stations for the children. Once they complete all the activities, the passport holder will receive a small prize.

Tom Lee Park is very much a community park that is open to everyone. Homeschool Day is just one of the many ways Tom Lee Park is promoting that sense of community.

“At Memphis Riverparks Partnership, we believe that the Mississippi River really belongs to all of us together,” said Abbott. “It’s a place that inspires us and it’s a real place to learn about the river, to learn about the history of the river, the culture of the river, its ecology, and the way the river operates today. That opportunity should be open to everyone. We say a river front for everyone and the Homeschool Day is one of the ways that we try to make that promise real.”
