9th Annual Death by Voice Vocal Competition

Registration is now open for the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM) 9th Annual Death by Voice Vocal Competition that will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024. The performance competition “provides encouragement and a performing opportunity for young singers pursuing a music education or careers as vocal artists” and And is and open to high school students (ages 15 – 18) and full-time UTM students who are enrolled in private, applied music lessons in the current semester

Contestants will perform before a panel of judges in one of the three categories that includes High School, College Art Song, and College Aria. The first-place winner in each category will perform their winning selection at the UTM Spring Choral Concert. Winners will also receive monetary prizes.

For the High School category, students will perform from memory one art song, opera aria, or music theater selection in the original language. Awards will be presented as follows:

1st place – offer of a music scholarship not to exceed $1,000.00/year (for a maximum of four years) † *
2nd place – offer of a music scholarship not to exceed $500.00/year (for a maximum of four years) † *
3rd place – offer of a music scholarship not to exceed $250.00/year (for a maximum of four years) † *

†A music scholarship is awarded to a high school winner who wishes to pursue a music degree (Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music in Music Education or Performance options) at UTM. It is not limited to studies in the year following graduation from high school. The scholarship will be awarded once the winners have officially registered for UTM.

*Dependent upon the number of entries in the competition, the Department of Music reserves the right to not award 2nd and/or 3rd place prizes.

REGISTRATION CLOSES THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2024.
