S.T.E.M. Mini-Camp to be Offered at Lone Oaks Farm

High school students in ninth through twelfth grades are invited to attend a free STEM Mini-Camp that will be held at Lone Oaks Farm in Middleton, Tennessee Friday through Sunday, April 5 – 7, 2024.

The camp is free with the tagline, “Because Learning Shouldn’t Have a Price!”

“We hope that by offering the camp for free that it will remove the financial barrier that prevents many potential first-generation college students from participating,” said Aaron Spurling, UT Extension Specialist.

This is the first time the camp has been offered and it is geared towards students who have an interest in science/STEM and enjoy exploring the outdoors. Campers will do hands-on activities, participate in team building, and enjoy recreational activities. Students have the option of staying on-site for the camp or may attend daily. Lodging for the camp and food are also free.

Mr. Spurling hopes campers come ready to learn and have fun. Although the focus is S.T.E.M., students do not have to be proficient in that area of study.

“So many kids believe that they are not good at math, and that math has limited relevance to the real world or their daily lives,” said Mr. Spurling. “The goal of this camp is not to have students learn about science and math, but to have them DO science and math in meaningful ways that solves an ongoing, real life problem and brings the process to life in a way that engages students and helps them see themselves as scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.”

Mr. Spurling hopes campers gain confidence in using modeling to solve real world problems; explore career paths within mathematical and computational modeling, and enjoy learning outdoors in a team-based environment.

Registration closes on Friday, March 1, 2024. You may register for the S.T.E.M. Mini-Camp.
