Spring Homeschool Days at the Memphis Botanic Garden

The Memphis Botanic Garden (MBG) is hosting Homeschool Days in February, March, April, and May just in time to see the beautiful flowers bloom as you stroll through the garden. The sessions will be held on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and is geared towards students ages six and older. Each Homeschool Day sessions has a focus and hands-on activities that will keep students engaged. The theme for the spring semester is nature journaling.

Nature’s ArtFebruary 5, 2024

Learn what Nature Journaling is and make your own nature journals and build nature journaling supply kits. We will walk around the part of the garden we are in and collect items to include in our journals with either water color or colored pencils.

Seijaku-En (Japanese Garden) DiscoveryMarch 4, 2024

Our March class will entail learning about the Japanese garden, learn the history of calligraphy and use bamboo brushes to write a few Japanese words in script on a fan.  They will then collect and draw/write in their nature journals.

Arboretum Adventures – April 1, 2024

In April, we will head to the Arboretum and learn about the various plants and flowers there. Discuss pollination, collect items for our journals then draw/write and reflect.

Birds and Blossoms – May 6, 2024

Learning about birds and blossoms is for the May class. We will walk around the garden and listen and observe the birds and their offspring. We will dissect a flower and learn about all the parts and save them in our nature journal. We will have reflection time and the students will write/draw/paint/color in their journals.

The students get to take their nature journals, water colors, colored pencils, sharpeners, and bags home on the last day of the class.
